Interview

How do you like Arashiyama?

Oh, it's beautiful, isn't it? It's amazing, yeah. We were just saying, like... this is the first, well, the second day we've been here, and this is by far and away the most beautiful place we've been to in Kyoto so far. Just for the bamboo grove and everything. We looked it all up in Lonely Planet, didn't we? Yeah. That told us where to go, and it's...it's been a highlight so far, of Kyoto, definitely.

Why did you come to Arashiyama?

Ok. Yeah, so... for the bamboo grove, definitely, and the monkey park. And for the temples and shrines as well. Because I think, is it four hundred shrines or something, in Kyoto? Over four hundred. Like, it's quite interesting, because, being from England, we don't have a Buddhist culture as such, so it's really interesting finding out about the different cultures and religions. So that's one of the main reasons.

Have you been anywhere else in Japan?

Yes. Do you want to answer this one? You can. (laughs) Ok, so, we've done... Tokyo, obviously, we flew into Tokyo. Nozawa Onsen, skiing, yeah, we did Hiroshima, Kobe, and Koya-san. We've just come from Koya-san, so that was a highlight as well, wasn't it? Beautiful, beautiful place.

Are there any similarities between Japan and where you're from?

Yes and no. We were just saying the cities are so much different. The cities are a lot different. They tend to be like... everything built up, whereas, like, in England, it's quite widespread--a bit like Kyoto, actually, it's more widespread. Yeah... I can't think of anything, really, that's quite similar. Obviously, the taxi services. Your trains are so much better than ours. (laughs) So much better. Yeah, I don't know, really. I think more, and more... I was surprised by how much Western culture there is in Japan. I was expecting it to be more... how I pictured it from, from films and stuff, and anything else, and um... So I was quite surprised by that, yeah. But it's definitely a cool, cool, cool country to be in. I like it more than England. (laughs) Definitely.
